This is a fantastic result for such a well-priced chianti. The panel described it as "Savoury, vegetal, nutty, smoky nose. Great power, with leathery notes on the palate. A robust, gripping, serious red."
The Grape Varieties used by the Mazzei family for the Fonterutoli are 90% Sangiovese with 10% Merlot. Both the Sangiovese and Merlot components are barrel aged in 225 ltr french oak, of which 50% is new, for 12 months. This produces textbook Chianti Classico with bitter Morello cherry notes, nicely taut structure and food friendly finish.
